Abstract

Introduction: Telenursing represents an emerging strategy to strengthen health systems and respond to the current needs of populations.

Objective: To analyze the available evidence on telenursing in Latin America with a focus on applicability to the Salvadoran context.

Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted, following the recommendations of the PRISMA guidelines, in PubMed, LILACS, Google Scholar, and EBSCO databases during February 2025. The search strategy included the descriptors “Telenursing” OR “tele nursing” AND (“El Salvador” OR “Latin America” OR “developing countries”) AND (“implementation” OR “challenges” OR “opportunities”), for the period between 2015 and 2025. Only systematic reviews in Spanish and English, focused on the adult population, that addressed the application of telenursing as a complement to health care were considered.

Results: Seven studies were selected that emphasize how telenursing improves the continuity of patient care, reduces hospitalizations, increases patient satisfaction, and complements traditional health services. The findings are grouped into three main categories: primary care, chronic disease management, and care in emergency situations.

Conclusions: Telenursing is an effective and complementary tool in healthcare, especially in contexts where accessibility is limited. However, challenges related to technological infrastructure and the importance of nursing staff training for its implementation have been identified.
