Introduction: Research on prefrontal syndrome has grown exponentially in recent decades. This study provides a bibliometric and visual analysis of the most influential literature in the field.
Objectives: To identify and analyze the one hundred most cited Scopus articles on prefrontal syndrome between 1993 and 2022.
Methods: Observational, analytical, retrospective study. A comprehensive search was performed in Scopus database. The one hundred most cited articles were retrieved and the variables collected were year and journal of publication, affiliation of the corresponding author, country of origin of the authors, article category and funding sources.
Results: The total number of citations for the one hundred articles ranged from 176 to 3700. Neuropsychological Rehabilitation (n = 8) was the leading journal in which the majority of articles were published. The United States produced the majority of articles (n = 17); the University of Angers was the entity with the most funded research (n = 5) and Le-Gall Didier was the most cited author (n = 144). Descriptive studies were found to constitute the majority of articles (n = 60). According to the citation number, the studies that evaluated the diagnosis were highlighted (n = 65) and the keyword with the highest co-occurrence was neuropsychological tests (52).
Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis revealed that research on prefrontal syndrome is an emerging field with scientific evidence, whose growth is expected to increase as the aspects and manifestations of the disease and its treatment become known.
