Plagiarism and predatory journals: an economic and ethical problem in Colombian public universities

Authors

Abstract

Publications with plagiarism and in predatory journals constitute the archetype of misconduct in researchers and a frontal attack on scientific integrity. Plagiarism is the misappropriation, partial or total, with or without intent, of an idea or work, without granting recognition to the original source. Predatory journals are fraudulent journals that, through massive invitations of spam emails, offer the rapid publication of research without peer review, at the expense of transferring the publication charges to the author.

Scientific integrity is blurred with works totally or partially plagiarized or published in predatory journals, to the extent that this destroys the bases of the scientific evaluation system associated with the validation of the research process, it promotes distrust in the researcher involved and the institution to which he belongs, affects the funding of research and, finally, induces the discredit of science. Unfortunately, both plagiarism and publication in predatory journals are still current and growing.
